In a loose retelling of the Revolutionary Girl Utena TV series, Utena Tenjou arrives at Ohtori Academy, only to be immediately swept up in a series of duels for the hand of her classmate Anthy Himemiya and the power she supposedly holds. At the same time, Utena reunites with Touga Kiryuu, a friend from her childhood who seems to know the secrets behind the duels. Utena must discover those secrets for herself, before the power that rules Ohtori claims her and her friends, new and old.
Detailed description of the couple (likely to contain spoilers)The movie is incredibly abstract, so it's hard to define what's really going on, but the two meet on a dueling ground where whoever wins the swordfight becomes engaged to Anthy. This happens because it's believed she holds the power to revolutionise the world. Over the film, Utena forms a deeper connection with Anthy, spiraling into love. The film ends with Utena transforming into a car and escapes the surreal, abstract, shifting school. The ending shows them driving off into the outside world on the skeleton of a car, kissing as they ride away.
It should be noted it's strongly implied the movie takes place in another reality shortly after the events of the anime series, where Anthy is freed of her brother's control and goes to another reality to find Utena. This is my favorite movie of all time! it's a beautiful, surreal masterpiece that perfectly encapsulates the experience of being queer.
