Actress Brandy Friday hears of a remake of the classic romance movie Hotel Reverie, and requests to play a gender-flipped version of the lead, Doctor Palmer. After getting the role, she spends time watching the original movie and her attention is drawn to Dorothy Chambers who plays Clara, Doctor Palmer’s love interest. She finds and watches footage of Chambers’ audition for the role, which leads her to notice reporting of the actress’ tragic death by overdosing on medicine. Brandy arrives to film the movie, which uses a new technology called ReDream in which her mind is placed in a computer-generated world populated by AIs programmed to behave as the characters in the original movie would. When her character is meant to play Clair de Lune on a piano, she is unable to do so as she doesn’t know how to play. Brandy assumes the audio can be replaced in editing, but the simulation reacts to what is actually played and diverges from the script. Brandy is forced to distract the AI Clara and dump out her poisoned drink before she would be killed, which upsets Clara. Clara leaves, and Brandy chases after her but accidentally calls her Dorothy. This reference to the real life actress causes some kind of shift in the AI of Clara, making her expand in complexity and become more of a real person, which also breaks the system allowing Brandy to be removed from the simulation. Brandy finds out that she has to complete the story and say her famous final line or else she will be trapped in the virtual world. They continue despite some problems with the plot, and the story gets somewhat back on track, although a romantic scene between Doctor Palmer and Clara is much more heated than in the original movie. As they are kissing, someone in the real world spills coffee on the server running the simulation, leading the entire world to become paused except for Brandy and Dorothy, as well as causing Brandy to lose contact with the people giving her direction from outside the simulation. Dorothy, upset and confused, demands an explanation, so Brandy explains everything. Dorothy tries to escape the virtual world, telling Brandy not to accompany her, and finds that she can pass through the edge of the world to a black void. When she does so, she gains the memories of Dorothy Chambers as well as the reporting on her death. She learns that Dorothy was a lesbian, in love with a woman who worked on the set of Hotel Reverie, but they were unable to be together and Dorothy eventually became depressed and killed herself. The AI Dorothy returns to the hotel and she and Brandy decide to spend the time together if they are both stuck there. They kiss and have sex and spend many months together, falling in love. One day Dorothy tells Brandy that she loves her, and Brandy says she feels the same for Dorothy. Just then, the outside world establishes reconnection with Brandy and tells her they are going to reset to a save point. Brandy is confused and takes some time to realize what is happening. She tries to tell them to stop, but it is too late, and Dorothy loses all memory of the time they spent together as they are returned to the moment they were kissing just before the simulation had paused. Brandy is devastated, and only says her lines after repeatedly being reminded by the people outside. When she is on her own, she clarifies that she would be stuck there forever if she doesn’t say her final line at the end of the movie. However, as the plot progresses somewhat differently from the script, Clara ends up shooting her murderous husband character before he can kill Brandy, killing him just before cops arrive and see her holding the gun. As she is about to be arrested, she shoots one of the cops, and the other cops shoot her. As Dorothy is dying, the people in the real world are shouting at Brandy to say her final line so she can be removed from the simulation. Though she is overwhelmed by grief, Brandy eventually says the line and wakes up in the real world. After some months, Brandy receives a gift from the movie producer: a usb drive containing a version of ReDream that can run on her computer, along with a telephone. She starts the program, and it shows Dorothy Chambers’ audition footage that she had watched before, in which the actress sits next to an inactive telephone. When Brandy connects the telephone she received and picks it up, it calls the phone within the ReDream simulation and she is able to talk to Dorothy as she watches her on her computer screen. Dorothy asks if Brandy knows her, to which she replies that she does and also doesn’t, and it would take a long time to explain. Dorothy tells Brandy that, since her voice is so kind, she has all the time in the world.
